Many people hear about bee venom therapy in Crete but are not sure what it involves. At Hirudo.Clinic, the experience is consultation-led and takes place in a calm, natural beehive environment, with careful attention to allergy awareness, personal health history, and informed choice.
Bee venom can cause allergic reactions, including serious reactions in sensitive people. A consultation and safety screening are therefore essential before any booking is accepted.
What is bee venom therapy?
Bee venom therapy is a traditional form of apitherapy that uses carefully controlled exposure to honeybee venom. Some people are drawn to it as part of a natural wellness routine, while others are curious about long-standing bee-based practices. Because scientific evidence can vary by condition, it is best understood as a complementary wellness experience rather than a proven medical treatment.
Bee venom, bee sting therapy, apitherapy, and apitoxin
- Bee venom is the substance released by a honeybee when it stings.
- Apitoxin is another name for bee venom.
- Bee sting therapy typically involves using a live honeybee sting to deliver its venom. The exact method must be explained before consent is obtained.
- Apitherapy is the broader term for the traditional use of bee products. It can include honey, propolis, pollen, royal jelly, bee-based skincare, and bee venom.
You can learn more in our guide to apitherapy.
A natural beehive setting in Crete
The setting is part of the experience. Time near the hives offers fresh air, natural sounds, and a slower pace away from a busy clinic atmosphere. This can help you feel calm and connected to the Cretan landscape. The environment itself is a wellness experience; it does not make bee venom risk-free or prove a medical effect.
What happens before a session?
- Initial inquiry: Tell us what interests you and whether you are currently in Crete.
- Safety questions: we ask about bee or wasp allergies, previous sting reactions, medications, pregnancy, and relevant health conditions.
- Consultation: we explain the proposed method, potential discomfort, local reactions, the risk of a serious allergic reaction, and alternatives.
- Suitability decision: a request does not guarantee that the experience will be suitable. You may be advised not to proceed or to speak with your doctor or allergy specialist.
- Booking will only be made after the consultation and screening, and a suitable date will be discussed.
Safety screening and allergy awareness
Redness, warmth, tenderness, itching, and swelling can occur around a sting site. More serious reactions can affect breathing, circulation, or several areas of the body. Read our full guide to bee venom side effects, allergy risks, and safety screening before requesting a consultation.
Who may be advised not to proceed?
Bee venom therapy may be unsuitable for people with a known bee venom allergy, a previous serious or whole-body sting reaction, or health circumstances that could increase risk. Extra caution is needed if you are pregnant, have poorly controlled asthma, a mast-cell disorder, significant heart or lung disease, or take medicines such as beta-blockers, blood thinners, or immunosuppressant medication. This list is not exhaustive. Never stop or change prescribed medicine for this experience.
Hygiene and aftercare
The skin area and any reusable equipment should be handled in accordance with an appropriate hygiene procedure. You will be told what local reactions may occur, what aftercare is appropriate, and whom to contact with a non-urgent concern. If symptoms suggest anaphylaxis after a sting, seek urgent medical help immediately in line with local emergency guidance. In Greece and across the EU, the emergency number is 112.
Balanced expectations
People may seek bee venom therapy for many personal reasons, but interest and traditional use do not prove benefit. We do not diagnose conditions, promise outcomes, or advise you to replace medical care. If you have symptoms, a diagnosed condition,n or questions about your medicines, speak with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
